Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide.
This month, The Lancet published a series of three papers exploring the issue of low back pain; what low back pain is, how to prevent and treat it, and a call for action.
.
The short of it is:
• Low back pain does not discriminate. It occurs across all age groups and socioeconomic status'.

• Years lived with disability is increasing due to population increase and ageing.
• Recurring back pain is common and can lead to persistent and disabling pain.
• Medical imaging, bedrest, opioids, injections and surgery are not always the right course of treatment, and should not be considered the primary steps to addressing the issue.
• Recommendations include education, exercise, and psychological programmes for those with persistent symptoms.
