Got knee pain and thinking about getting an x-ray?

July 30, 2018

It’s worthwhile seeing a physiotherapist before you go down the radiation route. A physiotherapist can assess you for any ‘red flag’ symptoms (those that indicate a need for an x-ray or MRI), so you can potentially save yourself a costly and often unnecessary imaging appointment.
Studies have shown that up to 85% of adults with no actual knee pain had x-rays showing knee arthritis; meaning there is little correlation between pain and degrees of arthritis shown on x-ray.
You could end up with an incidental finding of arthritis when that is not in fact the true cause of your knee pain. Studies have also found that unnecessary medical imaging may even be psychologically and emotionally harmful.
Come and see one of our physiotherapists to find out if there’s a better solution to your problem!
